Boston Terrier Daily Tips

Everything You Wanted To Know About “The Amercian Gentleman” Of Dogs.

Lately, I’ve come across a myth about how long it can take to train your Boston Terrier puppy, and wanted to set the record straight.

There are claims that training your pup can take up to six months. This is certainly untrue!

If you use the right methods from the very start it hardly takes any time at all. However, there are a couple of common mistakes you need to avoid - and I mean right from day one of having your little companion.

The first and biggest mistake you can make is a failure to set boundaries at the beginning. Here’s what typically happens. When your new four legged companion is just a cute little pup, you end up spoiling him/her with affection, let him be on the bed, couch and everywhere.

And because, at the stage there’s no harm done, being so small, you play around without any boundaries. The problem is however, that from an early stage the pup learns that being anywhere and doing anything is just fine and the affection and attention you give is always the same.

Once such an understanding is ingrained in him, at a later stage it becomes a lot harder to undo that care-free behavior. It’s only when he’s grown a bit, and your furniture and carpets take a beating that it becomes a concern for you and now you may face a more uphill struggle.

Nip the behavior problem in the bud, so to speak. Start setting the “do’s” and “don’t’s” from the very first day…and you will avoid all the struggle of training.

The other mistake to avoid is - lack of consistency.

In order to train your Boston Terrier puppy effectively, you just need 10 minutes…but everyday! Consistency is the key to getting a well behaved dog.

You can’t just try to stop a barking problem by training for two hours in one day and hope the barks go away. Just use the proven methods and be consistent with your training time.

And quite honestly, when you just do 10 minutes a day, it won’t seem like a frustrating chore, but it’ll be a great and fun playtime for you and the rest of the family too.

Boston Terrier Soccer Skillz

Here’s Moses showing off some soccer skillz…in case you missed him playing at the World Cup!

Ever wondered why Boston Terrier training is easy for some, while others pull their hair out in frustration?

For those of you who are having difficulty getting your dog to behave, feel that you may have a particularly difficult one, and somehow, YOUR “little terror” is born a troublesome one and doesn’t respond to training.

That’s not really the case.

The only time the lack of good behavior really is down to the dog is if he/she suffered from some hereditary problems which went unnoticed when you first got them at the breeder or rescue center. But in most cases getting your Boston Terrier to listen to you is not hard at all.

However there is a hidden truth about training Boston Terriers successfully. Well actually, there are two things you must get right if you want to transform your “little terror” into a well behaved angel.

For the loving owner that dotes on their little one, they become part of the family. We just can’t help it, especially when we gaze into their big beady eyes! And while it’s expected that you fall in love with him/her, you still have to remind yourself that he or she is a pet!

Sure you can love your Boston like one of the family, but only in affection, not in practice. So many give food from the table, some let them play around on the bed and couch when they’re young. Yes…we tend to spoil them at every opportunity. But this kind of no boundaries behavior, by you the owner may come back to haunt you.

Failing to establish yourself early on as the “pack leader”, allows them to feel like they’re the “boss”! Not you. And once this happens, training your terrier turns into a uphill struggle. From the very first day, you must be clear in your own mind of what you will NOT want your dog to do, and train according right from the start.

The trouble is when you’ve got a cute and small puppy, he/she is so harmless that you may allow them anywhere and everywhere, but by the time they grow up, that turns into a problem.

The other mistake some make is attempting to train them in a random order, or try to overcome too many behavioral issues at the same time. This is NOT effective at all. Training your Boston Terrier is like building blocks. The success of one thing depends on how well he learned the previous. What you must use is a step by step Boston Terrier training method, if you want to see quick and permanent results.

The great part is once you do this systematic and regular, initial training, you’ll never have to worry about having a “boston terror” ever again.
